Running an interior design / architecture firm sounds glamorous.

– A market that undervalues thinking but worships visuals
That part? Everyone already knows.
But the real battle is inside the firm… and sometimes inside ourselves.
You’re managing:
– Employees who don’t understand accountability
– Drawings that look good on screen but collapse on site
– Contractors doing shoddy work
– Materials that don’t meet standard
– Project designers who talk well but can’t control scope some don’t even try
– Staff who think design ends at concept, not delivery
– Business development that’s never easy to win
And when things go wrong, the responsibility doesn’t land on the drawing.
It lands on the owner.
All fingers point to the Founder / CEO.
You’re not just “leading a company.”
You’re absorbing chaos so everyone else can sleep.
You’re the one:
– Fixing mistakes before site explodes
– Catching errors at midnight
– Explaining basic construction logic again and again
– Protecting the firm’s reputation with your sanity
Here’s the truth nobody says out loud:
Not everyone in your team should be in this profession.
Harsh? Yes.
True? Also yes.
Design is not a hobby.
It’s technical, contractual, legal and high-risk. If someone can’t handle pressure, accountability, and constant learning, they’re in the wrong industry. Full stop.
Leadership is lonely because you carry everything:
financial risk, legal risk, reputation risk and people’s livelihoods.
And still, you’re told:
“Be patient.”
“Be kind.”
“Be understanding.”
You are… until the firm starts bleeding.
This is not a rant.
It’s a confession.
If you’re running a firm well respect.
You’ve mastered one of the toughest businesses on earth.
And if you’re living this reality right now:
People don’t see what you carry but that doesn’t mean it isn’t real.
Don’t quit.
